Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve Injury following Prone Position of Spine Surgery

Abstract
Meralgia paresthetica is an entrapment neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve characterized by localized dysesthesia and numbness on the anterolateral aspect of the thigh. The nerve crosses under the inguinal ligament at its attachment
to the
anterior superior iliac spine, where it angulates acutely, and then pierces the fascia lata. Previews on meralgia paresthetica listed various medical and surgical conditions as causative factors, but so far no case has been reported where
meralgia
paresthetica occurred following spine surgery position itself. Its cause is maybe prolonged prone position with pillow under anterior superior iliac spine on the operating table. We experienced a case of meralgia paresthetica by malposition on
spine
surgery in a patient with lower lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.
